The Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, SPPU is rising to reach a greater height!

The Centre for China Analysis and Strategy; India Office of the Konrad-Adenuer-Stiftung and Centre for Advanced Strategic Studies, in collaboration with the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies (DDSS) organised a Two-Day Conference on “Rise of China and Implications for the World” on 11th and 12th April, 2022.

#SESSION_1: The conference commenced with the Inaugural Session at Sant Dnyaneshwar Hall, Main Building, Savitribai Phule Pune University, at 10 am, on Monday, 11th April 2022. The welcome remarks were delivered by Air Marshal Bhushan Gokhale, Former Vice Chief of Air Staff. Mr. Peter Rimmele, Former Resident Representative to India, Konrad‐ Adenauer- Stiftung, delivered a speech. Prof (Dr.) Vijay Khare, Head of the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, delivered his remarks. The Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University, Prof. (Dr.) Nitin Karmalkar, also shared his remarks. The keynote address was delivered by Ambassador Gautam Bambawale, Former Indian Ambassador to China, Pakistan and Bhutan. The Inaugural Session ended with a vote of thanks.

#SESSION_2: This session commenced at noon, at JW Marriott, Senapati Bapat Road, Pune. The topic for this session was “China's Strategy Agenda”. The Chairperson for this session was Prof. Chintamani Mahapatra, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University. The Speakers for this session were Ambassador Gautam Bambawale, Former Indian Ambassador to China, Pakistan and Bhutan; Maj. Gen. Rajiv Narayanan, Head. CS3, USI of India and Ms. Shan Shi, Regional China Officer for South Asia, US Embassy, India, who delivered her speech virtually

#SESSION_3: This session focused on “Global Economic and Technology Changes and Impact on India and China”. Mr. Peter Rimmele, Former Resident Representative to India, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, headed the session as Chairperson. The Speakers were Dr. Ajit Ranade, Vice-Chancellor, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune; Mr. Kiran Karnik, Former President, NASSCOM; Mr. Madhukar V. Kotwal, Former Whole-time Director and President Heavy Engineering, Larsen and Toubro and Mr. Bharat Panchal, Chief Risk Officer, APAC, expert on cyber security. This session was followed by discussion and questions & answers.

#SESSION_4: This session started on Tuesday 12th April, 2022 at JW Marriott at 10:30 a.m. The topic for this session was “India Pacific International Perspective”. The Chairman for this session was Admiral Arun Prakash, Former Chief of the Naval Staff. The Speakers were Mr. Matt Ingeneri, Economic Growth Unit Chief, US Embassy India who delivered his speech virtually; Rear Admiral Sudarshan Shrikhande, Former Head of Naval Intelligence, Dr. Gudrun Wacker, Senior Fellow, German Institute for International and Security Affairs who delivered virtual speech; Dr. Seshadri Chari, Chairman, China Study Centre, MAHE, Manipal University and Prof. Ryoheri Kasai, Visiting Researcher, Centre for South Asian Studies, Gifu Women's University, who delivered a virtual speech. The discussant was Prof. Arvind Kumar, Central for Canadian, US & Latin American Studies, School of International Studies, JNU. This was followed by discussion and questions & answers.
 
#SESSION_5: This session was on “Changing Geopolitics in View of Russo-Ukrainian War”. The Chairperson was Air Marshal Bhushan Gokhale, Former Vice Chief of Air Staff. The Speakers were Admiral Arun Prakash, Former Chief of the Naval Staff; Dr. Gudrun Wacker, Senior Fellow, German Institute for International Security Affairs who spoke virtually; Ambassador Venkatesh Varma, Former Ambassador of India to the Russian Federation and Dr. Shreekant Paranjape, Adjunct Professor, SPPU & Research Fellow, Center for Mil Sc at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. This was followed by discussion and questions & answers
 
#CONCLUDING_REMARKS: The Two-Day Conference was thought provoking, enriching, informative as well as interactive. The Chairperson was Mr. Pankaj Madan, Deputy Head, Konrad-Adenuer-Stiftung, India Office. The Speakers were Dr. Adrian Haack, Resident Representative to India, Konrad-Adenaeur- -Stiftung, who spoke virtually. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Namrata Hasija, Research Associate, Centre for China Analysis and Strategy.
This conference was coordinated by Air Marshal Bhushan Gokhale, Former Vice Chief of Air Staff. It was Co-hosted by Ms. Namrata Hasija, Research Associate, Centre for China Analysis & Strategy and Mr. Pankaj Madan, Deputy Head (KAS-India).
 
I thank the Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of SPPU, Prof. (Dr.) Nitin Karmalkar, for his never ending support to the activities of the DDSS; the Hon'ble Pro-VC of SPPU, Prof.(Dr.) N. S.
