M.Phil. Programme is a one year programme, designed to acquire research skill before going to Ph.D. degree. The duration of the M. Phil. course consists of two semesters i.e. 12 months, coinciding with the academic calendar of the University. This includes both course work and dissertation. The course work is required to be completed in the first semester followed by the dissertation.

Ph.D. is a research degree, designed to develop a critical understanding about the subject. The minimum duration for PhD course is three years and maximum five years, coinciding with the academic calendar of the University. The above duration includes both course work and dissertation. Course work has to be completed in the first semester followed by the dissertation.

Course work of M.Phil./ Ph.D. has the same course. This course comprises of three courses covering research methodology, study of conflict and peace, and study of contemporary literature. Researchers write dissertation under the guidance of a Research Guide.

M.Phil. / Ph.D. in Defence and Strategic Studies is governed by Rules and Regulations of SPPU and UGC for Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil. /Ph.D. Degrees.

ADMISSION PROCESS

Vacancy for each year varies with respect to the number of M.Phil./PhD. seat available with research guide. The Department, through SPPU central admission procedure, conducts the entrance examination. Those who qualify entrance examination get shortlisted for an interview. Department prepares final the merit list on the basis of the result of entrance examination and interview marks. University rules and regulation about reservations and various quotas are followed for preparation of merit list and final admission.
